Design for Waste Collection System in Taiwan

Absrtact
This project aims to design a waste collection system that is not only desirable but also feasible in Taiwan. We adopted Design Thinking approach. First, we conducted a case study to understand the waste collection systems among 7 countries and sorted out 3 strategies, including facilities, motivations & behaviors, and awareness. Second, we used grounded theory to explore the relationships between the sanitation worker (the service provider) and people (the user), and 5 aspects were revealed, including user's attitude, provider's attitude, direct interaction, indirect interaction, virtual interaction. Third, we led co-creation workshops and uncovered people’s needs and expectations in 3 aspects. They are internal incentives, external restrictions, and behaviors. Based on the results, we concluded 2 design guidelines, easy to maintain and clear guidance, and the design opportunity, providing an unhurried way to throw away household waste. Finally, we delivered three design concepts: “as long as you need”, “1-day station”, and “1-hour station”.
